Exclusively situated in the middle of the proclaimed 'Greater St Lucia Wetland Park' Reserve, with the largest marine lake in Africa, Makakatana remains the only privately owned Lodge set within this pristine 'World Heritage Site'.
The land on which the Lodge lies has been owned by the Morrison Family since the 1930's.  Here the glorious, unspoiled Wetland, provides an undeniable attraction to lovers of wild life.

Hugging the banks of the lake, this 12 bed luxury Lodge welcomes you to an elegantly decorated 'home from home'.  Private, air-conditioned suites are splashed with a mixture of Eastern and African Interior styles.  While three sides of the suites are lined with glass doors , one has the option of flinging them aside keeping the insect screens closed to deter any nasties who may feel sociable during the night!   The architecture is simply stunning, a feel for nature and the outdoors is carried into the bathrooms where one can lie back and watch the moon and stars through the glass roofed ceiling At night there is a change of atmosphere as soft lights line the boardwalks linking the suites.  A quick cocktail from the well-stocked bar
fridge prepares you for the evening feasts.  An interconnecting walkway leads you to a private camouflaged bush pool that allows you to sit, unnoticed as you watch the wildlife on and around the Lake.

How to get there

Directions FROM DURBAN and KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT at La Mercy

Heading North on the N2 (from Durban / from king Shaka International Airport) continue on the N2 (through Toll, pass Ballito, through Toll, pass Stanger, through Toll, pass Empangeni / Richards Bay). Pass the two Mtubatuba /St Lucia turnoff signs and keep heading north on the N2 for approximately 20 km.  Lookout for the Charters Creek/ Makakatana Bay Lodge turnoff signs – turn RIGHT.

Follow the tar road for approximately 10 km, go through the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Security Gate and keep going straight on the tar road for 2 kms and onto the dirt road towards Charters Creek.  About 1 km along the dirt road, turn right at the Makakatana sign.  Keep on the dirt road and follow the signs for another 4 km.

Directions FROM PONGOLA

Heading South on the N2 (via Pongola) – pass Mkuze and the Hluhluwe turnoff signs and continue heading south on the N2 for about another 25-30km.  pass the Nyalazi River sign and then look out for the Charters Creek / Makakatana Bay Lodge turnoff signs. – turn LEFT.

Follow the tar road for approximately 10 km, go through the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Security Gate and keep going straight on the tar road for 2 kms and onto the dirt road towards Charters Creek.  About 1 km along the dirt road, turn right at the Makakatana sign.  Keep on the dirt road and follow the signs for another 4 km. Makakatana Bay Lodge is situated within the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park Reserve, Zululand, KwaZulu Natal.
